Sudden, simultaneous deaths caused by external forces—disasters, massacres, wars, and genocide—bind people together in long-lasting, even generational, grief and trauma. This affects not only those directly involved, but also bystanders,… both near and distant. Its shadow does not easily fade; in fact, it threatens to grow over time. The void of futility exerts a dangerous gravitational pull, one that cannot be escaped by individuals alone. This gap can only be truly closed through the collective effort of a unified humanity.

Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
