My works are cast in pine panels using standard wall filler (not cement).
The image imagines language speaking to itself, echoing how language models work: processing vast datasets recursively, structuring and restructuring meaning in an ongoing loop.
Language is embedded in life, dividing raw reality into forms that can be organized and sustained. Consciousness emerges when a split or point of view appears within this… process, simultaneously revealing and concealing aspects of experience.
This blind spot within language gives rise to the self-aware subject—an entity able to question and choose. In this sense, the subject can be understood as language reflecting on itself.

Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
