About this artwork
'O Death, Where Is Thy Sting?' is an extract from 1 Corinthians 15: 55-57, and is a reference to the victory of Christ over Death through the crucifixion on the cross and the resurrection. In this artwork Afflick has portrayed a shrouded corpse holding a box, a reference to the soul or spirit. The corpse is connected to an unknown machine by cables to its brain indicating that life may be artificially supported. Psyche, the personification of the… soul, reaches for death, but death cannot take her while life is being prolonged. John Afflick appears to be addressing the moral issues pertaining to the recent developments of brain machine interfaces designed to connect humans and computers and the problems this technology may inevitably impose on mankind. 'O Death Where Is Thy Victory?' is a yearning for death and the transcendence of the soul in a world where death cannot be found.
« I can't remember ever not creating art, it's always been a part of me, like a limb or an organ, it's always been there. »
