About this artwork
The Sentinel is John Barney's take on a man who's extremely disturbed and conflicted about the world today. You can see the complexity of his thought process in his face. He's wondering what he can do about it - and, at least in his mind, has decided that he will stand as guardian to protect us from bad intent. However, beware the mind - it is malleable and can change in surprising directions. This painting was created with a palette knife, so texture…
is evident.

« Art gives me the opportunity to communicate the necessity of finding your own truth, and it's my hope that you will learn something about yourself through my work. »
John Barney is an American artist whose paintings have been featured in numerous solo exhibitions nationally. Formerly a school psychologist, he is fascinated with the concept of people working out issues in their personal lives. Therefore, Barney's portraits often portray subjects in "serious countenance". In addition, he is also intrigued by the hidden story a piece of art conveys, as the viewer's psyche and personal life experience will "fill in the blanks".
