About this artwork
I have always loved arches since I was a young boy and we went to visit Durdle Dor, a famous limestone arch on the south coast of England.
I saw the photograph of this arch, somewhere in France, looks like it is in chalk, or maybe it's limestone, either way I thought it would make a good subject for a painting.
I am at present enjoying studying the "Romantic " painters and decided that sort of approach would work well here. So the foliage colors… I borrowed from a painting by Henri Pierre de Valenciennes, and the sky is inspired by Poussin ( well, stolen!)
I decided to find out the symbolic meaning of the arch. It say "The arch signifies the opening of new perspectives and the ability. to see beyond the present. It is also used in some cultures as a symbol of renewal, representing a rite of passage where one leaves the old behind to embrace the new.
Which sounds good to me!.
