John Hazel, a self-taught painter hailing from rural Central California, works primarily in watercolor, having cultivated his talent through sketching and lifelong creative exploration. His style blends realism with imaginative interpretation, always leaving room for experimentation and personal technique adjustments to achieve the perfect finish. Hazel’s landscapes reflect life lessons drawn from nature, conveying a deep sense of patience, authenticity, and quiet encouragement, intending to inspire positive reflection in every viewer.
When I picked up a brush and painted my first watercolor in 2016 at age 67 I did not comprehend the impact of that moment on my life and the new paths down which it has taken me. I never intended to embark on a path of publicly displaying or selling any of my paintings, but with time and practice talent emerged and a conviction developed to share the gift I have been blessed with beyond friends, family and the walls of my house.
