About this artwork

Tijdens mijn studie aan de kunstacademie in de jaren 70 van de vorige eeuw vond ik modeltekenen het allerleukst.
Sindsdien ben ik het altijd blijven doen, in verschillende gezelschappen en opzetten. Er waren - soms vrij lange - periodes waarin ik er geen gelegenheid voor had, maar elke keer pakte ik het weer op. In mijn huidige clubje teken ik alweer zo'n 12-13 jaar een keer in de twee weken.… Sinds vorig jaar is daar een tweede groep bijgekomen, wat betekent dat ik nu - met veel plezier - minstens één keer in de week naar model teken.
Ik denk dat modeltekenen een van de belangrijkste aspecten is van mijn vak als kunstenaar en illustrator.

John Rabou, since 1980 artist-illustrator from ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.
I specialize in historical and archaeological illustrations and artist impressions. I strive for the greatest possible historical accuracy and plausibility. Until my “retirement,” I also created illustrations for (historical) youth books and biology, anatomy, and medical illustrations. I worked for educational and children's book publishers, heritage institutions, government archaeological services and companies, theme parks, and museums both at home and abroad. In England, I worked with an agent. I have a fascination with classical and medieval mythology.
Nowadays, I initiate and publish my own book projects, usually in collaboration with various writers, like "Wonderwezens" (2017) and "De vlucht van Daidalos" (2022), with author Imme Dros.
For almost 10 years now, I have been working on the designs for an embroidery project in Vlaardingen; a work in progress, when finished measuring about 35-40 m.
