About this artwork

During my studies at the art academy in the 1970s, I enjoyed drawing from life the most.
Since then, I have continued doing it, in various groups and settings. There were—sometimes quite long—periods when I didn't have the opportunity, but I picked it up again every time. In my current little club, I have been drawing once every two weeks for about 12-13 years now. Since last year, a second… group has been added, which means that I now—with great pleasure—draw from a model at least once a week.
I think that drawing from life is one of the most important aspects of my profession as an artist and illustrator.
During my studies at the art academy in the 1970s, I enjoyed drawing from life the most.

John Rabou, since 1980 artist-illustrator from ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.
I specialize in historical and archaeological illustrations and artist impressions. I strive for the greatest possible historical accuracy and plausibility. Until my “retirement,” I also created illustrations for (historical) youth books and biology, anatomy, and medical illustrations. I worked for educational and children's book publishers, heritage institutions, government archaeological services and companies, theme parks, and museums both at home and abroad. In England, I worked with an agent. I have a fascination with classical and medieval mythology.
Nowadays, I initiate and publish my own book projects, usually in collaboration with various writers, like "Wonderwezens" (2017) and "De vlucht van Daidalos" (2022), with author Imme Dros.
For almost 10 years now, I have been working on the designs for an embroidery project in Vlaardingen; a work in progress, when finished measuring about 35-40 m.
