About this artwork
As a former professional musician my long engagement with classical music informs much of my work, referencing its emotional resonance through colour, rhythm and form. These paintings are from a series called Songs without words. They are not intended to represent music literally but rather to explore its emotional power in a more abstract sense. It can be argued that music only truly exists in space and time during its performance, but when the…
music stops and silence has returned its shadows persist in the memory of the listener. These paintings attempt to reveal those shadows.

John Rooke is a self-taught painter with a background as a professional musician, channeling his classical music experience into abstract painting and drawing, primarily with oil paint and cold wax on wooden panels. His technique is iterative, involving the layering and removal of paint and tissue paper to create textured surfaces that evolve spontaneously, embodying the ideas of time and transformation. Rooke’s art radiates emotional resonance—his works quietly intrigue and unsettle, inviting viewers into a reflective state where deep, unspoken feelings and personal discoveries unfold.
