About this artwork
A close-up, heavily cropped glimpse into a stranger as they ponder an event in their life.
This new body of work is my continuation of exploring color while experimenting with the layering of my brushwork and combining some of the elements I use in my sketchbook to create fun snapshots of people’s lives. Although my paintings primarily are portrait-based, I like to jump around with my approach as a means of curiosity and exploration. My goal with… my portraiture paintings is to move them beyond a standard portrait and into something “more”.

« My paintings are my attempt at leaving physical memories for myself and others by way of portraiture. »
At the age of 15, on a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago with his parents, Jonathan Mcafee was stopped in his tracks by Warhol's 'Mao,' and definitely marked the start of his artistic pursuits. Today, Mcafee is busy composing expressive portraits centred on the theme of memory.
