About this artwork
Covering a previous iteration in a loose black wash to begin a new stage of experimentation with ideas, I roughly marked out a pattern in charcoal. This was almost… a surrealist exercise in automatic drawing which was then followed up with deliberate brush work with a mat black enamel. The white enamel followed to edit and block out a space for the black to exist.
The work is inspired by the angular black and white work of Franz Kline..
I consider this work a subconscious self portrait and is the second in an ongoing series of experiments along this line of enquiry.
The use of black and white is to simplify my ideation and thoughts and represent the dichotomy of existence.
