About this artwork
My abstract digital photo-art is inspired by contemporary abstract painting. I am fascinated by the emotive power of shape and colour.
I use my camera to capture textures and structures, either from the world around me, or from acrylic paintings which I make specifically for this purpose. These are the raw ingredients that I use to compose my work in the digital realm.
Recurring stylistic elements in my work are the use of an altered, minimal colour… palette and an interplay of order and chaos, of spontaneity and restraint.
My work is purely driven by emotion: the images that I create carry no story or message. I only intend to create atmosphere and to convey the feelings and emotions that I felt at the time of making them to the viewer.
Printed on beautiful Hahnemühle German Etching paper with a 1 cm border to facilitate framing. Image size is 90x90 cm. Print size is 92x92 cm.
Print colours may differ slightly from those seen on your screen.

« Art is about creating emotional experiences. Let's make them intense. »
Joris Graaf describes himself as a completely intuitive and emotional artist. His works have recurring stylistic elements which include the intensity of composition and color combinations, high contrasts, as well as the interplay between order and chaos, melody and noise. Graaf’s artistic process begins with the quest for interesting textures and structures to photograph, which he often creates himself using varied materials. Several multiple-exposed photographs serve as the ‘raw ingredients’ of his compositions.
