The forms identity is obscured and fractured through combinations of thinly layered paint, scratched back surfaces and thick textural gestures. The image is intended to conjure impressions of the past and allude to a possible future, while questioning our relation to history and nature.

Joseph Johnson is an Australian-born artist currently based in London. Growing up on a flower farm, Johnson developed an early appreciation of nature. Pursuing art academically, he studied at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and earned an MA at Central Saint Martins in London. His work centres on portraiture and landscape painting.
