Paradise is a small oil painting on cradled wood panel that pays homage to our human ancestor, Homo erectus, an extinct species of archaic humans that lived during the Pleistocene geological epoch.
Painted in a style that references vintage natural history artworks, the painting offers an opportunity to contemplate the evolution of our species, our relationship to nature and mass extinction events. Exhibited at the Casita in Bern Switzerland as… part of an artist residency in 2016, and forms part of the series Habitual Alliances that explores various histories, and reflects upon the human condition.

Joseph Johnson is an Australian-born artist currently based in London. Growing up on a flower farm, Johnson developed an early appreciation of nature. Pursuing art academically, he studied at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and earned an MA at Central Saint Martins in London. His work centres on portraiture and landscape painting.
