The Conscientarian is an imagined portrait of Matthias Knutzen who was a 17th Century critic of religion and possibly the first atheist known by name and in person. This oil painting on cradled wood panel was inspired by a lithographic image of a man also named Matthias Knutzen, born 50 years earlier, who for the artist takes the position of his relative. The portrait is painted to reference religious icons and images of saints, an ironic gesture…
by the artist that also places the work as a possible icon for the humanist.
The Conscientarian was created for Art Lab 3, an artist residency and exhibition at The Casita in Bern 2016. In 2017 it was selected by curator Nicola Coleby for the Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.

Joseph Johnson is an Australian-born artist currently based in London. Growing up on a flower farm, Johnson developed an early appreciation of nature. Pursuing art academically, he studied at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and earned an MA at Central Saint Martins in London. His work centres on portraiture and landscape painting.
