About this artwork
Smack-Dab (In The Middle) starts my return to hard-edged, geometric and minimalist iconography. The title refers to a song by the same name released in 1979 by Janice McClain. It is a Rhythm and Blues/Disco music classic, in other words, an unforgettable dance tune.
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines smack-dab as exactly, directly, squarely, first used in 1892. When I finished this painting the title came to me instantly. The central part of the… painting says it all. This work was less intuitive than usual and approached in a more precise manner, starting from the center dimensions of the canvas and making decisions outward. I limited myself to red, black, and white because I wanted to explore a graphic outcome. Also thinking of signs and flags.
Titled, signed, and dated on the back. The painting is framed in a matte black floater frame making the overall size 19 1/2 x 25 1/2 and depth of 1 1/4 inches.
