About this artwork
This piece is part of a series that, like an unnamed palimpsest, presents each work at different moments of creation and under different interpretations of my vision, but it unfolds over time as a continuous experimentation with areas or fields of color against diverse backgrounds to achieve intersections like lines or borders. It is also a digression on the edges of color planes that can result from using acrylic with a total absence of reflection…
or brilliance, saturating the pigment with abundant calcium carbonate/gesso to obtain an opaque result. All of this within an expressive tradition that has invited contemplation since Mondrian and Van Doesburg, through Rothko, Barnett Newman, and the entire Color Field movement... Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Afro Basaldella... some from the Western museum record, to María José de Simón, Kippi Leonard, and Jean-Baptiste Besançon among my contemporary favorites. And the exploration continues...

Juan R. Correa is a painter who came to art later in life: he decided to return to the academy after becoming a surgeon with an established career. He explores acrylic painting on large-format rigid supports, prioritizing gestural expression and technical experimentation. His works are rooted in the tradition of American and European abstract expressionism, utilizing the spontaneity of the brushstroke and the energy of color. His aim is for his work to be an invitation to free contemplation and individual pleasure, conveying an atmosphere of introspection.
