About this artwork
"Happiness is a slow morning."
When I painted Mellow, the starting point was the memory of a carefree day: as a child, outdoors in nature, when everything seemed exciting and promising. That's how the bright yellow spot in the lower right came about, like a little treasure in the sunlight.
Then I thought about how valuable it is, even as an adult, to take time for oneself, to be mindful, and to find peace. I was reminded of the stillness in the… fog, which seems to slow everything down. That's why the picture has a light veil of mist, like on an autumn morning just before the sun breaks through: it makes everything quieter, more mysterious, and slightly estranged. I especially like how it makes the yellow look a little washed out.
In the subdued room light, Mellow appears shrouded in mist. As soon as the sun shines upon it, the image begins to glow, and suddenly the underlying structures become visible.

« I paint the moment where movement and stillness touch – rooted in an inner rhythm, grown from the nature-bound vastness of my childhood. »
Judith Riemer is a German abstract artist whose atmospheric works emerge from the interplay of movement and stillness. Influenced by her previous work as an interior designer, she explores the effects of atmosphere, light, and visual tranquility within a space.
After studying interior design, she continuously developed her artistic practice as a freelance painter. Her works are predominantly oil on canvas. Gestures, traces, layering, and deliberate reduction characterize her working process and create pictorial spaces of quiet tension and atmospheric depth.
Transitions are central to her work – moments of change, of pausing, and of becoming open. Light, rhythm, and reduced color palettes create works that do not seek to explain or capture, but rather to open space for individual perception.
Judith Riemer lives and works in Lower Saxony, Germany.
