About this artwork
In this portrait, I wanted to capture "loneliness" not as the absence of other people, but as an inner state of tranquility, melancholy, and slight alienation.
The green irises are the most vibrant element of the composition. They are radiant, yet seem to seek understanding from the viewer. They are the anchor of this painting.
On the realistic, yet painterly face, I applied expressive vertical and horizontal brushstrokes in shades of sage green… and white. These painterly gestures symbolize the invisible walls or filters through which we view the world in a state of loneliness.
I used a muted palette of beige, brown, and gray to emphasize the peace and nostalgia accompanying the title concept.
