About this artwork
This work depicts two crowned female figures, standing face to face, enveloped in red—the color of blood, struggle, and regained power. Beneath their feet, a pile of skulls recalls the imposed silences, the violence endured, and the heavy legacies from which they emerge.
Above them, an apostrophic gaze, witness to a collective memory: that of all those whom we have tried to reduce, erase or contain.
The figures, both fragile and imposing, embody… a transformation. They are no longer constrained bodies, but sovereign presences. Their crowns are not symbols of domination, but of reconquest—born from the ashes, forged in resistance.
This painting is part of an expressionist and symbolic approach, where the raw gesture and marked contrasts translate a rise in power: from silence to speech, from erasure to affirmation.
Julie Balsaux, a visual artist based in Brittany, works with drawing, sculpture, installation, and sound, drawing inspiration from reading and lived experiences. Her practice, fragmentary and constantly evolving, weaves together materials, narratives, and emotions in a dialogue, prioritizing circulation over completion. Driven by a deep attentiveness to others, she seeks to challenge assumptions and create spaces for encounter, where the imagination becomes a critical tool, carrying tensions and emotions that are both fragile and powerful.
