About this artwork
This work visualizes the essence of narcissism. A figure dressed in a suit lowers his trousers to reveal striking red underwear, standing as if in pride. Yet rather than exposing his true self, he displays only an external façade—symbolizing the reality of the narcissist who can never fully reveal their authentic identity. Against the black background, the vivid red underwear becomes the crystallization of the desire to be noticed, while simultaneously… evoking a sense of unease in the viewer. At once ridiculous and serious, it conceals beneath it a hollow and disconnected self.
Through this piece, I wish to pose questions to the audience: “How am I forming relationships right now?” and “Am I also treating others merely as mirrors of myself?” The courage to face one’s true self and to genuinely encounter others—and the possibility of restoring balance in our relationships—can only begin with self-awareness.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
