About this artwork
The figure in the work is not a specific person but a symbol of a perpetrator holding an indulgence. The traces of blood left on his face and hands imply that he has clearly committed an act, yet his posture shows no sign of remorse. With his arms spread wide and his head tilted back—as if saying, “So what?”—he embodies the familiar attitude of perpetrators in our time.
This work is not merely driven by anger or accusation. It questions how the very… notion of “responsibility” has collapsed, and how that collapse affects all of our lives. When one can commit wrongdoing without accountability, the moral fabric of society becomes dulled. Responsibility is no longer seen as an individual duty. When the collective sense that holds people accountable disintegrates, the community loses trust and begins to fracture.
In the face of a reality where fairness has eroded, I hope this work prompts reflection on what standards we must now establish.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
