About this artwork
This work depicts an individual who follows the ideal of love presented by society. The red line that cuts across the canvas does not represent love itself, but rather a social ideal imposed upon it. The figure moves along this line, only to find that it eventually breaks off at the edge of a black cliff. Standing at its end, the figure looks down into the abyss. This scene reflects the reality in which the pursuit of love, which once seemed endless,… suddenly confronts an unexpected rupture and a sense of futility.
The black cliff symbolizes the gap between ideal and reality, and the psychological fall that emerges from that divide.
Chasing After It is an attempt to critically examine the emotion of love as defined by modern society, while proposing a renewed perspective for its restoration. It invites us to question our understanding of love. Should love be the attainment of some predetermined value, or should it be a shared process of creating something together?
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
