About this artwork
Obedience provides a sense of stability in uncertain situations. The belief that following the authority’s orders reduces risk and achieves social harmony plays a key role in this. Psychologically, obedience has historically and evolutionarily been one of the vital survival strategies in human society.
As a reward for obedience, people gain stability, a sense of belonging, and various benefits, which bring psychological comfort. However, this often… comes at the cost of limiting one’s freedom to express opinions and make choices independently. Misled by the sweetness of obedience, humans sometimes carry out unethical actions simply by following the orders of authority. Such uncritical obedience poses risks to independent thinking and autonomy.
The work titled “Bang!” seeks to portray the human figures who engage in this kind of uncritical obedience.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
