About this artwork
This work is an homage to Jacques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps. The original painting greatly contributed to building Napoleon’s image as a great revolutionary hero. However, in reality, Napoleon crossed the Alps on a small mule, shivering from the cold and guided by a local farmer—not on a grand white horse. This contrast reveals the desire of a ruler to conceal the truth and fabricate his image in order to solidify his power. By adopting… the composition of the original painting but replacing the white horse with two human figures, this work portrays a modern-day figure of power who rises above the masses in pursuit of authority. Whether a ruler becomes a hero or a villain ultimately depends on their ability to read the spirit of their time. If they understand and respond to the needs of the people, they will be remembered as a hero. But if they ignore the public voice and rule only for a privileged few, they will go down in history as a villain.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
