About this artwork
This work was created in 2016. The figure in the stroller symbolizes a young generation that cannot grow up or stand on its own. The person suffers from their own helplessness, yet still cannot escape the confined space of the stroller. Nearly ten years have passed since I painted this piece, and now this image has returned to us in an even more concrete and realistic form.
Through this work, I did not intend to simply criticize or pity young people.… Rather, I wanted to reveal the reality in which hope is scarcely visible before them.
I hope this work does not stop at pointing to a particular individual or generation, but instead becomes an opportunity to reflect on the social structures we live in and the recurring sense of powerlessness within them.
And if independence cannot be achieved solely through personal will or effort, shouldn't we now clearly recognize that part of the responsibility lies within the structure of our society?
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
