About this artwork
The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich is often interpreted as a depiction of the sublime power of nature and the transience of human life. However, I perceived it as a symbol of humanity's desire to dominate nature. Inspired by this perspective, I reimagined the work, incorporating modern elements and crowds as a backdrop to express human ambition for power and control. The desire for power often stems… from anxiety, leading to competition, which in turn exacerbates that very anxiety, creating a vicious cycle. While the pursuit of power can foster self-development, excessive ambition reduces others to mere competitors, resulting in an unstable life filled with insecurity. To alleviate this anxiety, it is better to stand alongside others, sharing and connecting with them, rather than striving to rise above them. Unchecked desires, in any form, only lead to greater instability in life.
A painter by profession, Jungwan Chae boldly brings his military background to life. He employs anonymized, bald figures in suits to critique society, utilizing simple yet impactful beans to depict modern social realities. His art passionately expresses individual and collective dissatisfaction, stimulating dialogue about societal issues.
