About this artwork
Painting: indigo dye, pigment, 24k gold leaf on Paper.
She is inspired by living in the present moment and wanted to create a work that is a reminder of that. She hopes you also feel this.
The process of folding and folding the fine Japanese washi and dipping in my natural fermentation vats and making her own paints allows a dialogue with the artwork.
Indigo has been culturally, economically and socially significant for 6,000 years and it continues… to inspire her. A heavy dark industry contrasts with light and shade in the material. An historic and timeless process produces something transient. The Universal becomes personal. These tensions provoke an powerful response.

U.S. painter, textile artist, and sculptor Justine Johnson has exhibited work in the U.S, U.K, France, and Latvia. Johnson makes her own non-toxic indigo fermentation vats, and then folds Japanese paper into various shapes before dipping it multiple times in the vats. Johnson then uses 24 karat gold leafing to repair the natural tears that appear during this labor-intensive process. Johnson's indigo and gold pieces have a depth of color and intensity of emotion reflective of their powerful creation process.
