« My practice is informed by the process and understanding of materials including their history and connection to culture . I express the emotional experience of nature, industry and the spiritual in my work. »
U.S. painter, textile artist, and sculptor Justine Johnson has exhibited work in the U.S, U.K, France, and Latvia. Johnson makes her own non-toxic indigo fermentation vats, and then folds Japanese paper into various shapes before dipping it multiple times in the vats. Johnson then uses 24 karat gold leafing to repair the natural tears that appear during this labor-intensive process. Johnson's indigo and gold pieces have a depth of color and intensity of emotion reflective of their powerful creation process.
