Inspired by the current lockdown, sheltering place and social distancing. Even thought it can feel like dark times she believes there is always hope.
This work is on fine Japanese washi paper.
Her work is diverse but always closely linked to process and understanding of materials including their history and connection to culture. work intuitively, currently exploring ancient method of organic sugar fermentation Indigo and the consequent resonance… in historical culture.
The fermentation vat is ‘alive’ ,cannot be hurried, the microbes need time to do the work and over time ‘feeding’ the vat is necessary to continue the process. Indigo is an extraordinary plant whose extract turns yellow/green when in water and blue when exposed to air. Indigo popular for more than 4000 years is still used . she thinks of the millions of blue jeans worn everyday. studied indigo in Japan, the painstaking dyeing techniques of Shibori, folding,tying,wrapping and Roketsuzome a Japanese form of wa

U.S. painter, textile artist, and sculptor Justine Johnson has exhibited work in the U.S, U.K, France, and Latvia. Johnson makes her own non-toxic indigo fermentation vats, and then folds Japanese paper into various shapes before dipping it multiple times in the vats. Johnson then uses 24 karat gold leafing to repair the natural tears that appear during this labor-intensive process. Johnson's indigo and gold pieces have a depth of color and intensity of emotion reflective of their powerful creation process.
