About this artwork
That paradoxical of being on the inside looking out and being on the outside looking in. The process that she uses is visible in the work. The fine washi is folded and un folded dips in natural indigo vats, un folded and painted with handmade watercolour pigment paint. She uses a small fragment of Moon Gold leaf , light from within and without.
She hopes as you look at the work you are transported to the interior or exterior and it is always changing… with each view.

U.S. painter, textile artist, and sculptor Justine Johnson has exhibited work in the U.S, U.K, France, and Latvia. Johnson makes her own non-toxic indigo fermentation vats, and then folds Japanese paper into various shapes before dipping it multiple times in the vats. Johnson then uses 24 karat gold leafing to repair the natural tears that appear during this labor-intensive process. Johnson's indigo and gold pieces have a depth of color and intensity of emotion reflective of their powerful creation process.
