About this artwork
Portrait of Miguel, at the time a stranger whom I wanted to paint. Something in his excessive eyes prompted me to ask him if he would pose for me. He agreed to come to my studio, I painted him several times. In this expressive brushstroke portrait, I was free. I felt free, and the color says it all. A tough-looking young man whose gaze changed as he told me about his son. The eyes don't lie.

Karen Kruse is a Spanish artist whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Denmark, Germany, and Greece. After years in her career in the restoration of older works of art, she decided to pursue her own artistic expression. Isolation is the central theme in her compositions, which, ironically, unites us all. Kruse feels that as much as we communicate, we are essentially alone, 'inside our skin'. Her bold portraits and landscapes are imbued with emotion.
