About this artwork
An eternally amazed child asks the question "What is the world?" Here, for example, a putto (16th century).
Just as fire simmers in the centre of the earth, it is also at the centre of this work of art to answer the question. As the first element, it surrounds the globe on which the putto is leaning.
Symbolizing the second element, the earth, there is a sunflower that leans protectively towards the child. On the left, water cascades down from… the earth, the landscape that forms the middle ground, in an impressive waterfall.
The circle of elements closes with air. It can be found in the allegory of air in Botticelli's "Birth of Venus". The flow of air creates this picture from top left to bottom right.
