About this artwork

Een paar weken geleden ging ik mijn tuin in en merkte dat de magnolia begon te bloeien. Dit is voor mij altijd een grote gebeurtenis. Deze boom is erg mooi om naar te kijken, maar het verhaal erachter is even zo bijzonder. Mevrouw Derks onze toenmalige achter buurvrouw plantte de boom als klein meisje samen met haar zusje. Ze had er haar hele leven gewoond, zelfs toen wij in ons nieuwe huis gingen wonen dat onze tuinen met elkaar verbond. Mevrouw… Derks is enige tijd geleden op hoge leeftijd overleden (ze zal ongeveer 84 jaar oud zijn geweest, denk ik), maar ze heeft zo’n bijzonder geschenk nagelaten aan onze buurt. Ik maak jaarlijks foto’s van de bomen in de achtertuin, maar dit jaar ben ik er nieuwe ontwerpen mee gaan maken. Het formaat van dit schilderij is 100x130cm, gemonteerd op een aluminium frame, gemaakt met fotografie, gedrukt op papier, op het canvas verlijmd en afgewerkt met gel medium voor de structuur, acryl, olieverf en oliesticks en een zijdeglans vernis. Karin Vermeer is an independent artist who has lived and worked in Rotterdam since 2002. Her works are created by digitally combining and editing photographs and paintings into new, original works of art. Vermeer specializes in portraits created by overlaying and blending four to five different faces, of different race and origin, to create a new, non existing person. The digital images are printed and paint is added to achieve the final result: an attempt to make a digital image tangible once again.
