About this artwork
The Raw mixed media portraits are created by digitally merging different photos. These digital compositions form the basis for the mixed media work and function as a colorful underpainting. After completing the digital process, thick layers of gel media are applied by hand, after which the artwork is further finished with acrylic paint, oil paint, oil sticks and a UV-resistant varnish.
The materials are creatively applied with brushes, sponges,… palette knives, rollers and even fingers, making the digital origin tangible again. Each work is handmade on a linen canvas attached to an aluminium 3D frame. The series of these unique works of art is limited to a maximum of 25 copies, with no copy identical to another, which emphasises the exclusivity of each portrait.

Karin Vermeer is an independent artist who has lived and worked in Rotterdam since 2002. Her works are created by digitally combining and editing photographs and paintings into new, original works of art. Vermeer specializes in portraits created by overlaying and blending four to five different faces, of different race and origin, to create a new, non existing person. The digital images are printed and paint is added to achieve the final result: an attempt to make a digital image tangible once again.
