In her vibrant Rotterdam studio, artist Karin Vermeer masterfully blends the digital and the tangible. Known for her striking portraits of female models and abstract images of textured surfaces, Karin begins each piece with digital manipulation, crafting unique and original works.
Her fascination with contrasts drives her process. Once the digital phase is complete, she prints the images and transforms them using paint and gel medium layers. She… creates depth and texture with brushes, palette knives, sponges, and her fingers, ensuring each raw structured portrait is distinct within a limited edition of no more than 25.
Each piece starts with a digital foundation, but the application of acrylics, oil paints, and oil bars animates her work. Finally, a satin varnish adds a polished finish, enhancing the colours and bringing her creations to life. Through her playful dance between digital art and traditional techniques, Karin invites viewers to engage with the sensory richness

« I combine the digital and tangible, so I combine two worlds together. »
Karin Vermeer is an independent artist who has lived and worked in Rotterdam since 2002. Her works are created by digitally combining and editing photographs and paintings into new, original works of art. Vermeer specializes in portraits created by overlaying and blending four to five different faces, of different race and origin, to create a new, non existing person. The digital images are printed and paint is added to achieve the final result: an attempt to make a digital image tangible once again.
