About this artwork
In a dark ritual room, the magician summoned a demon from the triangle of manifestation and the demon began to talk about the past and the future, about the creation of the world and about the place of man in it, appearing in a phantasmagoric company of visions. The figure of the magician, symbolizing hidden secret brotherhoods that prefer neutral contemplation of the course of history, stands in a protective circle and closes himself with a magic… disk, like a shield, from the harmful breath of the demon - a talking head. The demon speaks of war and the need for a bloody revolution, as a necessity, introducing himself as a wise philosopher, theologian, political scientist. Behind the magician, outside the protective circle, sits a vision, a donkey-student with large ears and a human face - a vision of virginal youth, naively absorbing the poisons of misanthropy, sacrifice of life for an idea. For the devil comes to steal, kill and destroy...
Karina Kulyk, a Ukrainian-born artist now based in Germany, predominantly works in oil on small canvases, infusing her backgrounds in classical art, music, and restoration. She masterfully applies vibrant, contrasting colors with direct brushwork, often eschewing sketches and favoring techniques reminiscent of Fayum portraits and distressed icons. Her art conjures fantastical beings and otherworldly landscapes, embodying Symbolism and phantasmagoria, where texture takes a backseat to vivid imagery. Through her work, she channels the haunting allure of immortality and surreal beauty, contrasted by poignant melancholy and existential longing.
