About this artwork
The artwork "Calypso" takes the viewer on a surreal journey into the Greek mythology of the sea goddess Calypso. On the canvas, Calypso returns to the sea, but instead of the once idyllic world, she finds herself confronted with a terrifying reality: environmental destruction and the impact of humans on nature. Bees and forests are disappearing, while an octopus hides in plastic and an airplane in the background symbolizes pollution.
Particularly… notable is Calypso's hair, which is made of an octopus - a sign of her highly intelligent nature and at the same time a metaphorical representation of the connection between the goddess and the sea creatures. Her gaze is marked by despair in the face of the destructive forces that threaten the sea: radioactive barrels, drifting ice floes and birds that eat plastic are just some of the symbols of humanity's disregard for nature.
Karina Schiefer, a painter with a background in surrealism, uses mainly acrylic on large-format canvases. She combines acrylic mixed media with surreal approaches to create an innovative visual language with multiple interpretations. Her art is a reflection of her soul and conveys a mix of reality and dreams that is emotionally charged and reveals new worlds.
