About this artwork
This photograph was taken as part of a commission – an opportunity to approach this building with focus and the eye of an architectural photographer. The Campus Tower, an icon of the Niederrad office district, was designed in 1969 by Hans Soll as the Hertie headquarters and carefully reinterpreted in 2001 by Christoph Mäckler Architects.
What attracted me was the uncompromising clarity of this red: a single accent of color that breaks through the… strict geometry of the cast aluminum facade and simultaneously lends it its true dignity. The entrance becomes the face of the building – a cool modernism that suddenly reveals warmth.
I deliberately chose to photograph from the side, rather than head-on. The dominant diagonals draw the eye into the depths, break up the austerity of the facade, and lend the image a dynamism that sets the portal itself in motion.
