"Erika E." is one of the pictures that surprised even me. I didn't stage Erika—I invited her to simply be there. My aim isn't to illustrate age, but to remind us that beauty isn't a matter of years, but of the attention with which we look.
Erika, born in Berlin in 1910, dedicated her life to helping the poor. Her motto: "Treat people as you would like to be treated."
The portrait appeared on magazine covers such as INTERNAZIONALE, BEOBACHTER and… DU magazine and was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London as part of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize (2011) and received numerous awards – including Cannes Lion, CLIO and Lucie Awards (2015).
