About this artwork
The photograph of 100-year-old Tai Chi instructor Sonoko was taken spontaneously during a research trip to Japan for one of my books featuring portraits of centenarians, during a visit to her apartment in Tokyo, where she lives with her daughter. The portrait, without showing the elderly woman's face, impressively embodies the vitality, joie de vivre, and spontaneity of very old people in Japan. It was published in, among other places, the Frankfurter…
Allgemeine Zeitung and Die Zeit.
