About this artwork
I reference WWI in my art because I see it as the epitome of the senseless slaughter of war. Here an ammo box has been converted into a Red Cross ambulance filled with artifacts of an imagined soldier including a used & broken book of poetry (Rhymes of a Red Cross Man 1916) written by a ambulance driver.

Kat Flyn is an established American sculptor whose works have featured in prizes, exhibitions and collections across the US. Primarily an assemblage sculptor, her works nonetheless go beyond the materials she collects, constructed to investigate and make statements on various facets of the American society and psyche. Though Flyn explores serious subject matter including issues of racism, sexism, poverty and immigration, her style sits somewhere between folk art and cartoonish, creating a path of discovery for each viewer who can be drawn in by initial aesthetic qualities of the work before accessing its deeper narrative layers.
