About this artwork
This work was in response to the heartbreaking attempts by refugees trying to escape the violence in the middle east. They were crammed into small boats and their attempt to escape often resulted in calamity; and even when they successfully reached foreign shores they were then refused asylum. The inspiration for this work goes back to a sorry episode in our history when we refused asylum to a ship (the St Louis, 1939) loaded with Jewish refugees…

Kat Flyn is an established American sculptor whose works have featured in prizes, exhibitions and collections across the US. Primarily an assemblage sculptor, her works nonetheless go beyond the materials she collects, constructed to investigate and make statements on various facets of the American society and psyche. Though Flyn explores serious subject matter including issues of racism, sexism, poverty and immigration, her style sits somewhere between folk art and cartoonish, creating a path of discovery for each viewer who can be drawn in by initial aesthetic qualities of the work before accessing its deeper narrative layers.
