About this artwork
Two views of the American Dream of home ownership are mounted on opposite sides of the table, demonstrating the dichotomy of that dream in our society. Both views inhabit the same base, but each view is invisible to and structurally separate from the other. But both were vulnerable to the foreclosure crisis that swept the country when the housing bubble collapsed during the Great Recession of 2008.

Kat Flyn is an established American sculptor whose works have featured in prizes, exhibitions and collections across the US. Primarily an assemblage sculptor, her works nonetheless go beyond the materials she collects, constructed to investigate and make statements on various facets of the American society and psyche. Though Flyn explores serious subject matter including issues of racism, sexism, poverty and immigration, her style sits somewhere between folk art and cartoonish, creating a path of discovery for each viewer who can be drawn in by initial aesthetic qualities of the work before accessing its deeper narrative layers.
