About this artwork
Constructed from an old cheese grater and a ribbon, I remind myself of how easy it is in our American culture to slip into viewing Black women as house cleaners and kitchen helpers.
The old deconstructed cheese grater has been reconstructed to resemble the outline of a woman. The patina suggest a Black woman. Her head is covered with a ribbon forming a bandana, reminiscent of the kitchen help of the past. At the bottom of the piece is souvenir dinner… bell dressed like Aunt Jemima. There is a tag on it saying it is a souvenir of Washington DC.

Kat Flyn is an established American sculptor whose works have featured in prizes, exhibitions and collections across the US. Primarily an assemblage sculptor, her works nonetheless go beyond the materials she collects, constructed to investigate and make statements on various facets of the American society and psyche. Though Flyn explores serious subject matter including issues of racism, sexism, poverty and immigration, her style sits somewhere between folk art and cartoonish, creating a path of discovery for each viewer who can be drawn in by initial aesthetic qualities of the work before accessing its deeper narrative layers.
