About this artwork
The artwork "Multilayered" is a horizontal collage of Chinese paper, measuring 80x100x3cm, mounted on canvas. Thick layers of ash and pigment lie beneath the canvas, covered with paper and partially coated with a thick, smooth, whitish layer of wax. Despite this, the structure of the underlying paper remains clearly visible. Over this lie numerous light-colored paper layers, some tinted with white pigments to create a diverse and dynamic whiteness…
across the image. The glued-on pieces of paper, some with a rough texture, consist of many layers of Chinese paper tinted by the artist, forming a coherent and multilayered composition.

Katja Gramann is a German artist whose painting follows the tradition of Art Informel. All of her works are consistently abstract. Her works have been exhibited in Germany in numerous solo and group events. Katja Gramann has also been successfully represented by a gallery in Belgium since 2022. Her participation in a summer exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art in London in 2022 also brought her international recognition. The artist pursues three styles in her painting: acrylic painting, mixed media (using ash, pigments, rock flour, charcoal, rust, and paper), and abstract collages made of fine Chinese paper, which Gramann colors herself, dries, and then arranges into a painting in a multi-layered process. Since 2021, Katja Gramann has been teaching painting at independent art academies in Vienna, Kolbermoor, and Bad Heilbrunn.
