About this artwork
Katrin has developed this series in her studio in Tuscany over a two-year period. For each piece she collects old wood from discarded objects found in Italian rubbish heaps, basements, and sheds. The work is influenced by the Arte Povera movement. It also expresses Katrin's passion for discovering old structures and giving them a new validity without changing their original essence. She makes visible what has long been hidden, even leaving old nails…
intact. Through a laborious process of restoration and development, she preserves and transforms the wood without adulterating its character. These works combine tradition and contemporary life, embodying a belief in something, in what makes us alive in the moment – a belief in life. For everyone in his own way.

Katrin Grote-Baker is a painter and sculptor based in Germany whose works have been exhibited nationally, in Italy, and in the United States. Her art explores the themes of time, timelessness, the transcendence of boundaries (spatial, temporal, artistic, definitional, intellectual, etc.), vitality, joy, and the gift of life. Grote-Baker's compositions invite viewers into new spaces, encouraging them to reconsider conventional notions, received opinions, and what they think is true.
