About this artwork
I began the work "Pyramids/Spitsbergen" in 2024 and completed it in 2026 after a longer interruption. It was created based on photographic material from the internet.
The image depicts an Arctic landscape, sparse tundra vegetation against the backdrop of a vast inland ice sheet. A wooden boardwalk, lined with lanterns, stretches from the foreground towards the ice field, a remnant of civilization. It evokes the impression of a typical "lost place"… and is actually located near the Russian mining ghost town of Pyramiden, close to the Nordenskjöldbreen glacier in Svalbard. These anthropogenic remnants bear witness to the futile attempts of industrial civilization to tame the pristine wilderness of the far north.
