The simple shape showcases the inherent beauty that is the signature of Yellow Siena marble. Th effort is insured by a rising or setting sun. Sculpture making is my sun and this is a seminal piece in my career. It was on elf my first realized larger pieces when I was woking at Studio Leonardi in Pietrasanta in the early 90's. The stone remained still and I walked around it working away for months , orbiting the heavy stone like I was a small moon.… The work also represents the half of something and being half Japanese I am attracted to pieces that speak to my own East and West sensibility. For example, I had been reading the book, The Sun also Rises by Hemingway as well as the Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai...both examining the human condition. This stone holds a planetary fascination for me and is a beautiful geological painting unto itself.
Kent Laforme is a masterful sculptor and painter, trained in Canada and Italy, who delves into marble, stone, and oil painting to explore cultural identity and the continuum of sculptural tradition. His technique is rooted in classical hand-carving, blending East and West, with textured surfaces that play with light and shadow—marrying ephemeral abstraction and contemplative figuration. His artworks evoke deep reflection, the timeless power of nature, and a sense of existential wonder, inviting viewers into meditations on identity and the cycles that shape human civilization.
