Inspired by the Japanese book titled, "Kwaidon : Stories and Studies of Strange Things" and the marble, from Mt.Altissimo, aka. Michelangelo's Mountain. This sculpture echoes the Hand of God yet is tattooed with butterflies etched and inked into the marble. In Kwaidin the butterflies represent souls of the departed. The work blends East and West ideas, materials and subject matter. The hand itself appears as if a butterfly just flew off the fingertip...was… it there? The butterfly or it's ghost may be gone but it's memory and meaning remain.
Kent Laforme is a masterful sculptor and painter, trained in Canada and Italy, who delves into marble, stone, and oil painting to explore cultural identity and the continuum of sculptural tradition. His technique is rooted in classical hand-carving, blending East and West, with textured surfaces that play with light and shadow—marrying ephemeral abstraction and contemplative figuration. His artworks evoke deep reflection, the timeless power of nature, and a sense of existential wonder, inviting viewers into meditations on identity and the cycles that shape human civilization.
